Tips for a Safe Manicure: What to Look for in a Nail Salon

You go to the nail salon either weekly or as an occasional treat but do you know if your nail technician is doing what s/he should to protect you from fungus or other diseases?

First, make sure your tech has washed her hands or at the very least used hand sanitizer so germs aren’t spread between clients. You should wash your hands too.

Second, make sure that any tool that s/he uses has been cleaned and disenfected first. If s/he just pulls it out of a drawer or a kit, get up and leave.

Third, make sure you see the license displayed for your technician. Some salons allow unlicensed people to work and this puts you at risk and is illegal.

Fourth, make sure that clean towels and cloths are used for you and that the tech isn’t using one from her last client.

Look for clorox, bleach or other disenfectants for evidence that the pedicure station is being cleaned properly between clients.

Finally, if your tech has open cuts or sores that you can see and s/he isn’t using gloves or other protective barriers, don’t take a chance. If you have microscopic cuts or tears in your skin, you risk infection.

In future posts, we will talk about how to take care of your nails in between appointments.
