We all focus on protecting our skin when we are out in the sun (or at least we should!), but how many of us think to protect our hair? Whether it’s color treated, curly, kinky, wavy, straight, natural, relaxed or permed, your hair can suffer from damage from the elements as well. Many of us also subject our hair to too much artificial heat from blow dryers or flat irons. Lots of us have bought deep conditioning masks, but haven’t achieved the results we are looking for and can’t afford salon treatments.
Here are some easy masks that you can make at home to moisturize dry hair, treat your dandruff, deal with an oily scalp and just have more gorgeous hair, whatever your hair type. If your hair is really damaged, you may want to leave the masks on for a longer period of time.
Make sure to test these on your skin for 15-20 minutes before putting on your hair to make sure that you don’t have an allergic reaction to any ingredients.
| Banana & Avocado Hair Mask1 medium banana1/2 avocado1 egg yolk3 Tbsp buttermilk
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil Mash banana, egg and avocado in a small bowl. Add remaining ingredients and stir until well combined. Apply to hair from roots to tips. Leave in for 30 minutes and then wash out with a moisturizing shampoo. Double the recipe for long hair. Egg and Honey Treatment 1 Tablespoon honey 1 egg yolk ½ teaspoon almond oil 1 tablespoon plain yogurt Mix and apply to hair. Let sit for 30 minutes and rinse. Fenugreek mask for dandruff- remember, when you treat your dandruff, make sure to wash all sheets, towels, pillowcases and hats. Dandruff is caused by a fungus and you don’t want it to come back. Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds overnight in just enough water to cover them, In the morning, grind them to make a paste. Apply to hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Wash with mild shampoo Clarifying rinses: Use these to remove buildup without stripping your hair of its natural oils. Do not use a clarifier if you have keratin treatments or very dry hair. Otherwise, you can use these every one or two weeks as needed. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup water Use this as a final rinse after shampooing and keep on for 3 minutes and rinse completely. |
| Baking Soda rinse- double the ingredients only if your hair is very long or very thick. Using too much baking soda and not enough water will have the opposite effect and make your hair hard.1 tbsp baking soda1 1/2 cup of warm waterUse a spray bottle if you have one to spray the mixture into your hair. Work it through. Do not leave on for more than 5 minutes and rinse. |
